Missoula Fishing Report

May 26th

The Main rivers around Missoula are still running high from our spring run off. That is a good thing. The longer the rivers are high the longer the trout will have cold water during the summer. Even though they are running high you still have some great fishing options. The main Blackfoot has been fishing well as well as Rock Creek.

The Blackfoot: The dry fly fishing has been off and on. They will eat the big bug some days and some days they won’t. On the days they won’t the nymphing has been very productive. A big dark stone fly nymph has been the answer for stubborn trout. Streamer fishing has also been decent to good. Smaller patterns that look like little trout have been putting bigger trout in the net. Salmon flies will be here soon. Be ready when that happens, the fishing will be fantastic.

Rock Creek: The bugs have made it as far a Welcome Creek (14 miles up the creek). The warm sunny days will move the bugs up river quickly. By the end of the week I would bet they will be up to the forks. They are eating the smaller, less aggressive Salmon fly patterns very well. Once the hatch is full strength they will eat the big high riding patterns. For now think “Low Pro”.

The Creeks: Most of the local creeks are fishing very well. Lots of trout to be caught on the smaller water this time of year. Don’t be afraid to get out and explore something you have never fished before. You will be surprised by what you can find out there. The fishing in the tribs will eat Dries, Nymphs and Streamers right now. So go and get em!

This Late Spring/ Early Summer has been fantastic. If you are interested in getting out with a guide the first two weeks of June will be fantastic. Book your Missoula Montana Fly Fishing Trip Today!
