The Governor is encouraging outdoor recreation at this point in time. Fly fishing is a great way to get away from the crowds and enjoy the fresh Montana air.
Bitterroot River
The Bitterroot river fly fishing has been great for the last week or so. We are seeing an increase in flows which is putting the fishing down a little but still decent fishing. Colder weather is on the way and as long as it doesn’t rain to much, it should continue to be really good fishing when the flows level off. Lots of Skwala’s coming off and you can get away with throwing the big dry all day long. March Brown adults have started hatching and is a great searching pattern this time of year, especially with the cloud cover in the forecast. Keep an eye out in soft water for pods of fish eating BWO’s in the clouds too. Some of our go to Skwala patterns are Rogue Skwala, Plan B, True Skwala and Rastaman. Mayfly attractor patterns like Parachute Pheasant Tail and Parachute Hare’s ear can be great searching patterns that imitate the March Brown. For nymphs try G-Kes Two-Bit Stones, HS Pheasant Tail, Hot Spot PT, Pats and 20 Inchers. Check out our online menu of hot flies for the spring here. Blackfoot River
The Blackfoot River fly fishing has been effected by a few tributaries pumping mud into the main river making the water a little murky. Still a 1-2 foot of visibility which is fishable on the Blackfoot but you might give it until after the coming cold front to level off and clear up. Assuming we don’t get hammered with rain, it should be good to go by next week we hope. With water temps hitting a high of 48 degrees, this is the temp that streamer fisherman look for when fishing the Blackfoot in the spring. Missoula fly fishing is picking up on all our rivers now and with a little help from the cool weather ahead, it should be great in the coming weeks.

Clark Fork River
The Clark Fork River fly fishing has been one of the best rivers to fly fish around Missoula, but like the Blackfoot it has seen some muddy water pushed into the river from a few tributaries. Clarity is not great today and it will take a bit longer to clear up then the rest of our rivers. To bad because there has been Skwala adults and March Brown’s everywhere on the Clark Fork and the fishing has been good. Hopefully the cool weather will level the flows but don’t expect it to clear up as quick as the other rivers. We are hoping by the end of next week the clarity will improve. We will keep you posted.

Rock Creek
Rock Creek fly fishing continues to fish good even with a few minor bumps in flow the last few days. Skwala’s have come out strong in the sun and a few March Brown’s in the clouds. There is a cold front on it’s way but that shouldn’t effect Rock Creek to much other then the dry fly fishing will pickup a little later in the day. The bugs are there, the water temp is right and that’s all it takes to keep Rock Creek fishing good this time of year. For dries, try Skwala adult patterns like the Rogue, Morningwood and Rastaman. For nymphs focus on stonefly patterns like Pats, DB Stone and 20 inchers with droppers like PT Hot Spot BL, Hare’s Ear RL and Two Bit Hookers. Brighter streamers like the Kreelex and Sparkle Minnow have been producing some good fish. Good reports are coming in from the top to bottom of Rock Creek.
