Rock Creek is one of the most celebrated wild trout streams in Montana, flowing into the Clark Fork River about 20 miles east of Missoula. Known for its exceptional hatches and healthy population of wild cutthroat and rainbow trout, Rock Creek offers some of the best dry fly fishing in the state. Conditions can change quickly with snowmelt and rain, so staying current with the report is key before making the drive out.

This Rock Creek fly fishing report is updated regularly by our guides and staff to reflect current conditions, hatches, and techniques that are producing fish. Whether you're planning a wade trip or just checking in on conditions, this report will help you know what to expect on the water.

How's the Fishing?: 3/5

The recent bump in flows has made Rock Creek tough to fish over the last week. Flows are coming down quickly though, and things should turn around fast.

Salmonflies have been out mostly in the lower to middle section. With flows dropping and water temps warming up, we expect more salmonflies followed by golden stones. Green drakes should start going off on those cloudy days too.

What Hatches are Going?

Salmonflies, golden stones, green drakes, and yellow sallies.

How's it going to be in a couple weeks?

We expect fishing to improve significantly over the next couple weeks. This is some of the best fishing of the year on Rock Creek, with salmonflies, golden stones, green drakes, and yellow sallies all coming together.
