The Bitterroot River flows north through the Bitterroot Valley before joining the Clark Fork River just south of Missoula. One of western Montana's most popular fly fishing rivers, the Bitterroot offers excellent fishing for wild rainbow and brown trout across a variety of water types. Conditions can change quickly with snowmelt and rain, so checking this report before heading out is always a good idea.

The Bitterroot remains decent for the first half of the day. Hoot owl restrictions are in effect on the entire river, so you need to be done fishing by 2 PM.
FWP Restriction Notice: Hoot owl restrictions (prohibits angling between 2 PM to midnight) are in effect for the Bitterroot River in its entirety, from the confluence of the East and West Forks to the confluence with the Clark Fork River starting July 22.
For those of you who get out early, you will be rewarded with good dry fly fishing. It's mainly a terrestrial game right now, with hoppers, ants, and beetles all producing. We're seeing some decent Trico hatches midmorning, and there are still a few golden stones and Yellow Sallies hatching too. The upper stretches are running cooler water temperatures than the lower end.
We expect fishing to stay consistent over the next few weeks. Like the rest of our rivers, toward the end of August the nights will get longer and the days will get shorter, and water temperatures will drop. That should improve fishing dramatically into September, and we're expecting some great fall fishing.
