Blackfoot River Fishing Report

The Blackfoot River flows west from the Continental Divide before joining the Clark Fork River just east of Missoula. Known for its wild cutthroat and brown trout, the Blackfoot offers some of the most scenic and productive fly fishing in western Montana. Conditions can change quickly with snowmelt and rain, so checking this report before heading out is always a good idea.

The Blackfoot River is flowing right around 700. The fish are cool and happy! October caddis are showing up and providing some great dry-fly action. Moving these bugs a bit will get the picky eaters to take. Running mop flies or bird of prey pupa are getting it done underneath.

Hecuba are starting to hatch on the Blackfoot. Choosing a Hecuba or big caddis to prospect with rather than terrestrials are a good idea this time of year. Dropping a Frenchie or bullett underneath is a good option on days the fish aren’t looking up.

The streamer fishing is transitioning to the Fall game on the Blackfoot. Smaller streamers have been producing better than the great big stuff. Concentrating on tail-outs and heavier runs have been getting the meat-eaters hooked-up.

Keep in mind that the Blackfoot is closed to floating below Weigh Station due to bridge construction.
