The Blackfoot River flows west from the Continental Divide before joining the Clark Fork River just east of Missoula. Known for its wild cutthroat and brown trout, the Blackfoot offers some of the most scenic and productive fly fishing in western Montana. Conditions can change quickly with snowmelt and rain, so checking this report before heading out is always a good idea.

This Blackfoot River fly fishing report is updated regularly by our guides and staff to reflect current conditions, hatches, and techniques that are producing fish. Whether you're planning a wade trip or a float, this report will help you know what to expect on the water.

How's the Fishing?: 4/5

Hoot Owl has been lifted on the Blackfoot River. However, the river is still closed to floating below Weigh Station due to bridge construction.

The entire river has been producing well with a variety of hopper and general attractor patterns. Bullet droppers have been key when they are not looking for the dry. Larger fish have been eating dries in heavier water along the banks. If your usual spots are only producing little fish, try running a drift through some heavier, choppy runs.

Lighter colored streamers have been productive on inside seams and in boulder gardens. Nymphing deep with an October caddis pupa and a smaller mayfly nymph has produced some good afternoons.
