The Blackfoot River is one of Montana's most iconic fly fishing destinations, flowing west through a broad valley before joining the Clark Fork River just east of Missoula. Made famous by Norman Maclean's A River Runs Through It, the Blackfoot offers excellent fishing for wild rainbow and westslope cutthroat trout. Conditions can change quickly with snowmelt and rain, so checking this report before heading out is always a good idea.

This Blackfoot River fly fishing report is updated regularly by our guides and staff to reflect current conditions, hatches, and techniques that are producing fish. Whether you're planning a wade trip or a float, this report will help you know what to expect on the water.

How's the Fishing?: 5/5

The fly fishing on the Blackfoot has been great lately. There are still salmonflies up on the upper stretches, and golden stones are going on the upper, middle, and lower river. Add in plenty of PMDs and yellow sallies and the fish have every reason to stay looking up and eating dries.

The streamer fishing has really picked up over the last couple weeks and should keep going strong, especially with the cloudier weather coming in this weekend.

The forecast is calling for cold, cloudy, rainy days, and that's some of the best dry fly fishing you'll find on the Blackfoot all year. When you get cool, cloudy days in June, it's hard to beat. Those clouds should also bring out plenty of green drakes.

The stoneflies like salmonflies, golden stones, and yellow sallies won't be as active in the cloudier weather, but the fish will still eat them. When the clouds are out, focus on green drakes. The dry fly fishing should stay good right through the cold front.

It should just get better and better over the coming weeks with the cooler weather moving in and plenty of hatches on the water.
