Fishing Reports

The Report For: 7/3/2009
General Comments | July 4th Weekend:
Hot and sunny with great fishing all around. The best action this weekend will be the mid to upper Bitterroot and the Blackfoot for floaters. Upper and lower Clark Fork will fish as well. Its also a great weekend for a road trip. The Missouri, Big Hole, etc are all great options.
For wade anglers you've got unlimited water now as the tribs are down into fishing shape. With the amount of people around this weekend it would be a great time to take a hike and explore a new creek. Rock Creek has been on fire and you'll find increased wade opportunity on all of our rivers as flows drop into the mid-summer range.
We are seeing a variety of summer stoneflies out there from yellow and green sallies to giant goldens and sizes between. For mayflies there are a variety of pale duns out now as well as green drakes. We've also been seeing excellent caddis hatches this summer.
|
BitterrootRiver Flows | | Good fishing through the whole river. With the sun you can expect fishing to get more forgiving as you go up. Hatches are impressive right now including PMDs, Drakes, Goldens, yellow and green Sallies, and caddis. The prolific medium sized Bitteroot Golden Stonefly hatch is starting to swing in the afternoon. The eveving spinner fall is epic right now and is making for fun action to dark.
|
BlackfootRiver Flow Near Bonner | | Good fishing continues but this weekend you'll want to get on early and roll or wait and try it late. You'll see some of the heaviest recreational traffic of the year this weekend on the Blackfoot. It probably won't affect your fishing much but it might try your patience.
Its starting to feel like typical good summer fishing up here. You'll move a bunch of fish on dries and better be ready when you get your shots at the occasional big one. Nymphing will produce through the whole river.
Hatches include PMDs, Green Drakes, Sallies, Goldens, and Caddis.
|
Clark ForkRiver Flows | | The Clark Fork is ripe from the upper through the lower. Its dropping like a rock down low and clarity is good. The hatches are out and fish are starting to look up. The Clark Fork is definitely a little more of a gamble right now than its neighbors but the rewards can be big and there is much less pressure right now.
Hatches include giant goldens, pale duns, and caddis.
|
MissouriRiver Flows | | | Flows are getting cut back again out of Holter again and you can expect the Mo to swing this weekend. Dries, nymphs...take your pick. Caddis, PMDs, terrestrials, some Sallies, maybe brown drakes down low. |
Rock CreekRiver Flow Near Clinton | | | The fishing has been fantastic top to bottem. A variety of goldens and sallies out there from size 6 to 12. Lots of caddis. PMDs and drakes too. You can expect some company but its not going to affect your fishing a bit. Get yourself away from the road and at least you won't have to eat dust or answer any questions from the tourists taking your picture. |
